The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA)

founded in 2002, is the umbrella body for National Associations that play Armwrestling on the Continent of Africa. The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), is a member of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF), affiliated to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), Federation of International Universities Sports (FISU), Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), etc.

The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) is the owner and organizer of an annual continental Armwrestling competition dubbed the Africa Armwrestling Championship (AAC).

Egypt was the first African country to join WAF membership in 1992 but Morocco and Mali after representing Africa at the World Armwrestling Championship in Poland were later joined by South Africa in 2002 to create the Continental Federation called Armwrestling Federation of Africa. Egypt, Lybia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Mauritius, Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal,  later joined.

Morocco consecutively hosted the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Africa Armwrestling Championships and later 2008 after South Africa also hosted in 2005, 2006 and 2007 running. After a long break, the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) reorganized and gave hosting right of the Championship to Egypt in 2016, Nigeria in 2017, Ghana in 2018 and Mali in 2019.

Africa hosted the first International Mediterranean championship in Morocco with Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Greece, Mali and Morocco as participating countries.

Egyptian Osman Abdelghany is the first African WAF Vice President whiles ElMamoun Mohammed of Morocco is the first president of Armwrestling Federation  of Africa who reigned from 2001-2016. The later was succeeded by AFA President Zien Elhawary  in 2016. The President of AFA by structure is  always the Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation.

AFA for development and competition purposes have zoned Africa into 5 namely Central, Eastern, Nothern, Southern and Western.

Nasr Youssif is the head referee of AFA and a WAF Referee Panel member. AFA has 3 Master Referees, 6 Senior Referees and 3 Junior Referees who’re active.

The Executive Board

The 7 member Executive Board of the Africa Armwrestling Federation is the governing and management body of Armwrestling in Africa. Officers are voted through election for a tenure of 4 years.

Our Referees

All Armwrestling Championships and events are officiated by our well trained high standard Referees. Currently, Africa has 3 Master Referees, 6 Senior Referees and 3 Junior Referees.

Head Referee Nasar Yousef is a member of the World Referees Panel and a Master Referee whilst Africa’s Director of Training Husseini Akueteh Addy is a World Junior Referee.
