Ghana Prepares to Host the Prestigious 15th African Armwrestling Championship in 2026

Ghana is set to host the continent’s premier armwrestling event, the 15th African Armwrestling Championship, dubbed “Accra 2026,” from April 29 to May 3, 2026. The event promises to be a landmark occasion, serving as a crucial qualifier for the 2027 African Games in Egypt and positioning Ghana as a central hub for African sports excellence.

In an inauguration ceremony, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams expressed confidence and pride in Ghana’s role as the host nation. Speaking at the formal launch of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Hon. Adams highlighted the significance of the event for the continent and for Ghana’s sporting legacy.

A Platform for Excellence and Growth
Hon. Adams emphasized that the African Armwrestling Championship is more than just a competition; it’s a platform for showcasing strength, technique, and discipline among Africa’s best athletes. “This championship will shape the future of the sport on the continent and provide opportunities for our young athletes to shine on international stages,” he said.

He lauded the leadership of President Charles Osei Asibey of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, acknowledging his pivotal role in transforming armwrestling into a tool for youth employment, sports diplomacy, and international visibility. “Under his guidance, Ghana has become the ‘Hub of Armwrestling in Africa,’ dominating the sport since 2017 with impressive medal hauls,” Adams noted.
Ghana’s Track Record and Expectations
Ghana’s history in armwrestling is marked by success and dedication. The nation has previously hosted and won medals at the Africa Championships in 2018 and 2023. The upcoming championship is expected to draw approximately 450 pullers from over 25 African countries, with top officials from the World Armwrestling Federation, including the President and Secretary-General, expected to attend.

The Role of the Local Organising Committee
The Sports Minister underscored the critical responsibilities of the LOC, which include ensuring adherence to federation rules, providing state-of-the-art facilities, managing logistics, promoting the event, and ensuring safety and security. “This is a continental event, and standards will matter. Your planning, coordination, and execution will determine how Africa perceives Ghana and our capacity to host major sporting events,” he stated.

Looking Ahead to a Successful Event
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support sports development through the Sports Development Fund, which prioritizes sports with proven structure, discipline, and results like armwrestling. He called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, sponsors, the media, and the public, to collaborate and ensure that “Accra 2026” surpasses expectations.

“Success here will not only elevate Ghana’s sporting stature but will inspire young people, attract sponsors, and deepen our role in African sports,” Hon. Adams said. “I have confidence in your capacity to deliver a memorable championship that Africa will remember with pride.”

A Call for Unity and Support
Concluding his remarks, Adams urged unity, early planning, and open communication among all involved. “Let us work together to make this event a resounding success. Ghana’s hospitality, organizational excellence, and sporting spirit will shine through,” he affirmed.

As preparations intensify, Ghana stands ready to host a world-class African Armwrestling Championship that promises to leave a lasting legacy for the continent and the nation alike.
