Africa Armwrestling : Nigeria readies to host the 11th Africa Armwrestling Championship

The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the upcoming 11th Africa Armwrestling Championship slated for Lagos, Nigeria Navy Commodore Mayowa Olukoya has said Nigeria is ready to host the rest of Africa to a wonderful and unforgettable Africa Championship.

Speaking to www.africaarmwrestling.com, Commodore Olukoya who doubles as the vice president of Nigeria Armwrestling Federation revealed that as Nigeria celebrates 10 years of Armwrestling, they have planned to demonstrate the Nigerian hospitality making the championship a memorable one for patrons. He stressed that the 2022 championship will be better than 2017, the last time Nigeria hosted Africa.

Eng. Samuel Jackson, President of Nigeria Armwrestling hinted that about 23 countries have confirmed participation in the annual championship and Nigeria has taken delivery of customized medals and trophies for the july 19 to 24 championship at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, situated at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Nigeria.

President Jackson assured athletes and officials an awesome environment to compete for laurels. He therefore appealed to all athletes, officials and fans who will visit the venue to adhere to all COVID-19 protocols.

The multi-purpose Sports Hall would also hos the fourth edition of the Africa Para-Armwrestling Championship within the same period.

Over 200 athletes are expected to participate in the 4days event to battle for continental glory in both male and female in Junior, Youth, Senor, and Masters as well as disabled sitting event.

According to the technical rules governing the competition, Junior athletes would be athletes born from 2004 while Youth athletes would be athletes born from 2001. Seniors’ category will be competed by athletes of all ages while the Masters will be athletes born from 1982.

Meanwhile, para-athletes would not have any division as they would compete in -55kg, -65kg, 75kg, and +75kg bodyweight categories for the men while the women would also compete in bodyweights of -65kg and +65kg.

Points system for team classification will be made based on number of gold, silver, and bronze medals won.
